RESUMO

Neurological complications following whooping cough are rare. A case report involving a seven year old girl in which blindness and recurrent bilateral paralysis of the limbs occurres with slow recovery after treatment with steroids. It is postulated that these neurological complications were due to haemorrhage associated with edema and possibly anoxia. (AU)

RESUMO

The records of twelve patients in whom the clinical and biochemical manifestations of diabetes mellitus were of limited duration are reported and discussed. Six presented in diabetic coma or precoma. All have been followed up for periods varying from eleven to seventy-seven months. Five have relasped. Three who have not relasped no longer adhere to a diabetic-type diet. All are considered to be in or to have been in a latent phase of their diabetes. (Summary)

RESUMO

Two hundred and forty-six cases of "subarachnoid haemorrhage" admitted to a general hospital over a five year period (1952-56) are presented, of which 190 were treated "medically" and 56 "surgically". The results are compared. If patients dying within the first 24 hours of admission to hospital are excluded, the comparison between those treated medically and surgically is quite favourable towards "conservatism", confuting the generally quoted figures which usually have a decided bias towards surgery and are too often derived from selected groups. Patients with persisting symptoms and signs, or with a secondary rise in pulse rate and recurrence of signs and symptoms should be promptly investigated by angiography and sent to surgery. Non-ganglion blocking hypotensive drugs should be considered in the hypertensive subject. A plea is made for a more rational approach to the problem, particularly in centres where they are admitted to the wards of a general hospital. (AU)

RESUMO

82 cases of the reticuloses have been admitted to the U.C.H. since 1952. Their treatment is reviewed. There is a large measure of agreement as to the best therapy for each type and this has been followed as far as possible. Successful therapy is difficult to evaluate but is, at present, based on clinical and laboratory remission on the one hand and the comfort of the patient on the other, in what is at present an incurable condition (AU)
